Kasama Ikkansai Shigetsugu was one of the most important and influential smiths working during the Showa period. Shigetsugu was born in 1886 and begain his apprenticeship at the age of 13 under Miyaguchi Shigetoshi. Shigetsugu began working in Tokyo from 1903 and later forged swords as head swordsmith for the Nihon Tanren Denshusho and on the estate of Toyama Mitsuru.
This is a lovely gendai tanto which was papered by Fujishiro Matsuo to Ikkansai Kasama Shigetsugu. The hada is a flowing itame and the hamon is a suguha-based notare with kinsuji, sunagashi and ko-ashi. This tanto is in full polish with a fine gold-foil one piece habaki and a jo shirasaya in tiger-stripe honoki wood with horn hatomei.
