Yamato-den (大和伝) – The Yamato Tradition of Japanese Swordsmithing

The Yamato-den (大和伝) is one of the Five Great Sword Traditions (Gokaden, 五ヶ伝) of Japan, originating in Yamato Province (modern-day Nara Prefecture). This tradition is regarded as one of the oldest swordmaking schools, dating back to the Heian (794–1185) and Kamakura (1185–1333) periods. Yamato-den is known for its strong and practical swords, designed for battlefield durability, with a distinct emphasis on defensive capabilities.

Unlike the more artistic blades of Sōshū-den or Bizen-den, Yamato swords were utilitarian, reflecting their origins in the temples and warrior-monks (sōhei, 僧兵) of Nara, who required reliable weapons for protection and warfare.
