Applying Oil to the Blade

Applying oil is essential for preventing rust and protecting the blade’s polish. The best oil for nihontō care is choji oil (clove oil mixed with mineral oil), which is non-corrosive and slow-evaporating.

Steps for Oiling:

  1. Use a Fresh, Lint-Free Cloth:
    • Apply a few drops of choji oil onto a clean microfiber cloth.
  2. Apply Oil Evenly:
    • Gently wipe the cloth along the length of the blade from the tang toward the tip.
    • Apply a very thin, even coat – excess oil can attract dust.
  3. Check for Streaks or Buildup:
    • If too much oil is applied, lightly buff the blade with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
