Kanzan Ôshigata Scrolls
by Jim Kurrasch
from the August 1999 Nanka Token Kai Newsletter
Two months ago we used the Natsu no Maki scroll of Kanzan Ôshigata to help us study the Bizen den. To be honest in the past I felt that unrolling these scrolls were seldom worth the trouble. They are each about 20 meters – 65 feet long and are very troublesome to reroll. That night however I saw their real benefit. The room that we have our meetings in is about 30 feet long and ½ a scroll can be laid out for viewing at one time. That allows a rare opportunity to view a large time period of swords at once. In Bizen one can see the ko-kissaki, and curvature of Ko-Bizen swords. Then they can compare it to a ikubi kissaki tachi. Something similar can be used with the sori, the hamon, and the size of swords of different periods.
These ôshigata are also life size so it is simpler to understand the variations in shapes and sizes. I have felt that viewing ôshigata is a improvement over studying the actual sword since it allows a rapid assessment of what the artist saw after sometimes days of study. If any true student of Nihontô has a chance to buy a copy of these scrolls they should make every effort to obtain them. However they are not cheap.
From what I have heard 400 copies of the Kanzan Ôshigata were printed in 1969 and were sold out prior to printing. The U.S. price was about $350. This price was pretty steep then just as printing something like that today. However they are a art work in themselves.
The Kanzan Ôshigata consists of four scrolls. They are;
Haru no Maki – Scroll of Spring
Natsu no Maki – Scroll of Summer
Aki no Maki – Scroll of Autumn
Fuyu no Maki – Scroll of Winter
The Haru no Maki covers blades of the prehistoric period, Yamashiro Province, Yamato Province and Sagami Province during the Kotô Period.
The Natsu no Maki covers the Bizen Province during the Kotô Period.
The Aki no Maki covers Kotô swords of all the rest of the provinces not covered in the Spring and the Summer Scrolls. Some of the Bizen Province, Bitchu, Bingo, Suô, Etchû, Echigo, Hoki, Suruga, Ise, Mino, Ôshu, Chikuzen, Chikugo, Bungo, Higo and Satsuma Provinces.
The Fuyu no Maki covers all of the provinces during the Shintô and Shin-Shintô Periods.
Signatures, as well as ‘names of swords’ are in bold italics. Attributions are in bold type.
Gyobutsu refers to blades of the Imperial Collection
