This is something rarely seen. An ubu zaimei Chiyozuru (Echizen Rai) tanto. The blade is by Chiyozuru Iemasa and dates to the early Muromachi. The blade is in a Soshu-den style of omidare hamon in nie-deki with a broad boshi. Signed Iemasa saku and measuring 7 sun 4 bu. The blade has a thick kasane. In shirasaya with sayagaki and silver habaki. Current NBTHK kanteisho.
The Chiyozuru school is a later offshoot of Yamashiro Rai. Rai Kuniyasu, the student of Rai Kunitoshi, moved the school from Kyoto to Echizen province, and the lineage continued in Echizen and Kaga.
