Removing Oil and Cleaning the Blade
Before applying fresh oil, old oil must be removed to prevent dust accumulation and residue buildup.
Recommended Materials:
- Soft microfiber cloth (replaces traditional nuguigami paper)
- Dry, lint-free cleaning cloth
Steps for Oil Removal:
- Hold the Sword Securely:
- Grip the nakago with a soft cloth, keeping fingers away from the blade.
- Use a Microfiber Cloth to Wipe the Blade:
- Starting from the tang side (machi) and moving toward the tip (kissaki), gently wipe the blade with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Use light, single-direction strokes to avoid spreading residue.
- Repeat with a Dry Cloth If Needed:
- If excess oil remains, repeat with a separate dry cloth.
- Ensure no streaks or lint remain on the steel.
Note: Avoid using uchiko (powdered polishing stones) as they can cause micro-scratches and degrade the polish over time.
