Removing the Habaki (Blade Collar)
The habaki is the small metal collar that secures the blade inside the scabbard. Removing it allows for full cleaning and inspection of the blade’s surface.
Steps for Habaki Removal:
- Hold the Blade Securely:
- Support the nakago (tang) in your dominant hand while using a soft cloth to grip the mune near the habaki.
- Do not touch the cutting edge.
- Gently Slide the Habaki Off:
- If the habaki is loose, simply slide it forward off the blade.
- If it is tight, do not pry it with metal tools. Instead, lightly tap the mune near the habaki using a wooden mallet or a piece of soft wood to free it.
- Inspect the Habaki and Blade Surface:
- Check the habaki for any cracks or misalignment.
- Examine the hamon (temper line) and surface under the habaki for signs of rust or damage.
